Have you ever considered the option of living in a hemp home?

Whether it be a Hempcrete house, or the use of hemp insulation and hemp plywood, the health benefits to those that live in the home are many

In recent online travels, I encountered a spec drawing for a home made completely of hemp, hemp concrete, hemp based windows, the whole deal.  Being the skeptic that I am, I could not help but look into the idea of “hempcrete”.  A huge fan of straw bale homes, rammed earth building techniques and other sustainable, natural building methods have always been of great interest to me.  A hemp home though, this was new to me.

Can hemp really substitute for traditional concrete?

Substituting hemp based building materials for more traditional options of insulation and key areas of the home, is a fabulous idea!  Although many developments have been made in regards to the health risks associated with the chemicals found in many common building materials in recent years, I am still wary.

If you, as well, would like to learn more about the use of Hempcrete in a residential home, have a peak at the following Youtube link that will lead you to the Hempcrete home built in North Carolina, back in 2010.

After watching the documentary and reviewing the process of building with Hempcrete, I am sadly still rather wary of building a home made mostly from it.  The idea is awesome and is a great project for those with the time and finances to attack such a project…  I look forward to seeing what future developments are made in the industry!

What is hemp, anyway?

According to this entry found via Wikipedia, Hemp “is a commonly used term for high-growing industrial varieties of the Cannabis plant and its products, which include fiber, oil, and seed. Hemp is refined into products such as hemp seed foods, hemp oil, wax, resin, rope, cloth, pulp, paper, and fuel.  Hemp is not to be confused with the close relative cannabis, which is also a Cannabis plant, but is widely used as a recreational drug and medicine…”

For the smokers, tokers, vapers and edibles consumers, the beautiful ‘flowers’ of the Cannabis plant are what they are seeking!
